What is Windsurf?

Windsurf is an AI-native integrated development environment (IDE) developed by Codeium, a company founded in 2021 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen. Launched on November 13, 2024, Windsurf was introduced as the first agentic IDE, designed to move beyond simple code completion into collaborative, proactive AI assistance that understands and engages with an entire codebase. The IDE is built on the Visual Studio Code foundation, ensuring cross-platform compatibility across macOS, Windows, and Linux, and allowing users to import settings and extensions from VS Code or Cursor.

The centerpiece of Windsurf is Cascade, its primary AI agent for collaborative coding and autonomous assistance. Cascade supports multiple reasoning modes: Write Mode for direct code manipulation, Chat Mode for interactive planning, and Plan Mode for structured task planning before implementation. It achieves deep codebase understanding through intelligent indexing, persistent memory, and Codemaps (a beta feature that visualizes code execution flow and component relationships). The agent supports parallel multi-session workflows through Git worktree integration and is compatible with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for connecting to external tools and services.

Windsurf leverages a range of AI models. Codeium's proprietary SWE-1.5 model is offered free and delivers near-state-of-the-art performance. Third-party models include Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 from Anthropic (Sonnet 4.6 is widely regarded as the top performer for coding in Windsurf as of March 2026), GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.3 Codex from OpenAI, and Gemini 3.1 Pro from Google.
